Australia is a global leader in maritime robotics and autonomous systems with artificial intelligence (RAS-AI). However, because autonomous systems are developing faster than regulators can manage, there is a lack of a standardised, national set of processes to provide technical assurance of RAS-AI in a marine context. This has resulted in a fractured regulatory landscape that is difficult for drone developers to navigate, limiting their capacity to innovate and deploy their products.
This project is a feasibility study into creating systems that help RAS-AI developers meet regulatory guidelines. Our aim is to help protect Australia’s unique and precious marine resources, while unlocking the powerful scientific and industrial potential of autonomous underwater technologies.
